Ball Screw Support Type Analysis and Operation Common Problems

In the field of precision mechanical transmission, Ball Screw Supports, as the core component connecting the motor and the screw, are widely used in industrial robots, 3C manufacturing equipment and high-end medical instruments and other equipment. With the rising requirements of intelligent manufacturing on transmission precision and stability, its performance directly determines the operation quality and service life of the equipment.

Ball Bearing Housing

I. Classification System of Ball Screw Support Block

According to the structural form and application scenarios, Ball Screw Support Block can be divided into the following major types:

Standard Square Support Block Series: BK type and BF type are the representative products, which adopts modularized design and is suitable for the axle end of the conventional Ball Screws, and is characterized by high rigidity, square housing and precision bearings. The combination of square housing and precision bearings is suitable for small and medium-sized machining centers and other equipment.

Convex Reinforcement Bracket: EF type bracket optimizes the distribution of force through the unique cam structure, which can effectively disperse the stress when bearing axial loads, and is commonly used in large-scale gantry milling machines and other heavy-duty equipments.

Lightweight round support seat: FK type achieves the lightweight goal with round cross-section design, reduces the overall inertia of the equipment, and shows excellent dynamic response performance in high-speed automated production lines.

Customized special support blocks: AK, AF and other non-standard series are derived for non-standard screws or special working conditions, which can meet the high-precision transmission requirements of special industries through customized bearing configurations and mounting interfaces.

Common Failures and Causes in Operation

In the long-term operation of the equipment, the ball screw support base may face various challenges, the specific problems and causes are as follows:

Installation Process Defects: not using professional tooling for press fitting, or not calibrating the concentricity of the installation, resulting in deviation of the support base from the screw axis of more than ±0.02mm. Defective mounting process: The concentricity is not calibrated during installation, resulting in the deviation of the support base from the screw axis exceeding ±0.02mm, which generates abnormal vibration and noise during operation.

Overload Impact Damage: When the equipment encounters sudden load or mechanical collision, the bearing inside the support base is subjected to instantaneous peak pressure, which is easy to cause raceway spalling or cage fracture, especially in punch presses and other impact equipment.

Lubrication Failure Risk: If the grease-lubricated support seat does not select the appropriate grease according to the requirements of the working conditions (such as high-temperature working conditions without the use of high-temperature lithium grease), or the lubrication cycle is too long, it will lead to dry grinding of the bearings, and the temperature rise of more than 60 ° C will accelerate the wear.

Seal Failure Hidden Danger: In dusty environments or coolant splash scenarios, if the sealing lip material is not sufficiently corrosion-resistant, or the seals are scratched by sharp objects during the installation, it will cause dust and metal chips to invade and trigger the three-body wear of the ball and raceway.

Thermal deformation impact: continuous high-speed operation, the support seat due to frictional heat generation leads to increased temperature, if the heat dissipation design is insufficient, the thermal expansion of the material will destroy the bearing preload, resulting in increased transmission gap, affecting the positioning accuracy.

Fatigue failure: Under high-frequency reciprocating motion conditions, the support seat fixing bolts are subjected to alternating stress for a long period of time. If no anti-loosening design or regular inspection is adopted, the loosening of the bolts will lead to shifting of the support seat, resulting in the misalignment of the screw operation.

In order to ensure the reliable operation of ball screw support base, it is necessary to establish a full life cycle maintenance system covering installation specification, working condition adaptation, lubrication management and sealing protection, so as to prolong the service life of the equipment through preventive maintenance and ensure the stable operation of the precision transmission system.
