How to effectively prevent corrosion on SFE ballscrews? -- A Practical Guide to Total Process Protection

As a core component of precision machinery, corrosion of SFE Ball Screws will not only shorten the service life, but also cause equipment failure and production loss. This article starts from the cause of corrosion, combines material selection, protection process, environmental management and other dimensions, to provide a set of protection program can be put into practice.

Structural Analysis Of Ball Screws

First, understand corrosion: what factors in the "quiet destruction" of the screw?
The nature of corrosion is the chemical reaction between the metal and the external environment, for ball screws, the main triggers include:

Moisture erosion: moisture in the air on the surface of the screw to form a water film, and metal oxidation reaction, resulting in rust. The higher the humidity, the faster the corrosion rate (e.g., when humidity exceeds 60%, the risk of rust rises significantly).
Chemical substance contact: acid, alkali, salt and other media (such as acid and alkali mist in chemical workshop, salt spray at the seaside) will directly corrode the metal surface and even penetrate the protective layer.
Improper storage and operation: open stacking, contact with oil or fingerprints (containing salt), use of rough tools to carry, etc., will accelerate the corrosion process.

Second, the five-step protection method: from the source to the maintenance of the complete strategy
1. Choose the right material: give the screw "innate corrosion resistance"
Stainless steel is the basic choice:
304 stainless steel is suitable for most common environments, and the chromium-containing oxide layer can block oxygen and moisture; if the environment is highly corrosive (e.g., chemical and medical scenarios), 316 stainless steel can be chosen, and its acid and alkali resistance is better.
Special materials for special environments: In highly corrosive or high-temperature scenarios (e.g., marine engineering, heat treatment equipment), consider surface coated steel (e.g., nickel plating, nitriding treatment) or ceramic coated alloys, which can form a stronger protective barrier.

2. Coating protection: "Put a layer of protective clothing" on the screws
Lubrication protection: choose grease with anti-corrosion additives (e.g., lithium grease with molybdenum disulfide), which not only reduces friction, but also forms an oil film on the metal surface to isolate moisture and chemicals. In humid environment, you can change to waterproof grease; in salt spray environment, give priority to zinc-containing composite grease.
Plating and spraying:
Metal plating: zinc plating is suitable for indoor moisture-proof, nickel-phosphorus plating (high hardness and corrosion resistance) is suitable for strong acid environment;
Non-metallic coatings: epoxy powder coating is resistant to chemicals and high temperatures, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating is suitable for medical-grade clean equipment, combining low friction and corrosion resistance.

3. Environmental control: Creating a "low-corrosion" workspace
Humidity management:
Use dehumidifiers in the workshop or equipment compartment to control humidity at 40%-60%; install waterproof covers for outdoor equipment and place silica gel desiccant to absorb moisture.
Pollution isolation: install dustproof seals (such as double-lip skeleton oil seals) to prevent dust and debris from entering the screw; chemical workshops need to strengthen ventilation and discharge corrosive gases (such as hydrogen chloride and sulfur dioxide) in time.

Temperature management: avoid the screw to be in high temperature environment for a long time (such as more than 50℃), the high temperature will accelerate the oxidation of the grease; low-temperature scenarios (such as cold storage) need to choose the low-temperature-resistant lubricating grease, to prevent the grease from solidifying and failing.
4. Standardize storage and operation: details determine the protective effect.
Storage points:

Vertical hanging storage, avoid horizontal placement to cause deformation of the ball under pressure;
Wrap the screws with moisture-proof paper and plastic film, with built-in gas-phase antirust bag (valid for about 2 years);
Regularly monitor the temperature and humidity in the warehouse, and ventilate or dehumidify in time when the humidity exceeds 65%.
Attention to operation:
Wear powder-free nitrile gloves when handling to avoid the salt in fingerprints from corroding the surface;
Use nylon sling or special fixture for lifting to prevent wire rope from scratching the plating;
Clean the wire rope with anhydrous ethanol before installation to remove oil and impurities in transportation.
5. Regular maintenance: let corrosion "early detection and treatment"
Visual inspection:
monthly observation of the surface of the screw whether there is rust, pitting or coating flaking, available 5 times magnifying glass to assist in viewing the minor damage.
Lubrication and maintenance:
check the grease status quarterly, if found that the grease becomes dry, discolored or mixed with impurities, need to be cleaned and reapplied in time; follow the manufacturer's recommended lubrication cycle (e.g., replenish the grease every 500 hours of operation).
In-depth maintenance: Wipe the screw with soft cloth and mild detergent every year, avoiding the use of abrasive tools to damage the surface; carry out a comprehensive inspection (e.g. ultrasonic flaw detection) on the screw every 2-3 years, to check the internal stress corrosion cracks.

Why choose our SFE Ball Screws?
Our products are strengthened with corrosion resistance from material to process:

Material upgrade: 304 stainless steel as standard, support customized 316 stainless steel or surface plating process (such as nickel plating, nitriding).
Nano-protection technology: PVD magnetron sputtering process is used to form a diamond-like (DLC) coating on the surface of the screw, the hardness of which is more than 10 times that of ordinary steel, and the corrosion resistance is increased by 20 times.
Intelligent lubrication system: some models are integrated with micro-oil mist lubrication device, which realizes "maintenance-free" anti-corrosion through intelligent control of regular lubricant injection.
